When going on a long trip, we are often very aware of safety and spend time checking our vehicles and planning well ahead. However when we are running around to and from work, school, sporting events, stores and collecting teenagers, safety might get overlooked in the “everydayness” of it all. Yet safety is always the number one priority - for our protection and to avoid claims on our Maryland car insurance policies. Tips include:

1. Once a week, check your oil, water / coolant, brake fluid, and tire pressure.

2. Aim for “smooth” driving – which basically means smooth braking, gear changing, and negotiating of road curves, as well as avoiding last-second decisions.

3. Be well-prepared - before going out, plan your route well ahead including where you will park, and allow extra time, especially in peak times or on a wet day.

4. Always leave a decent gap between your vehicle and the one in front – you should be able to see the bottom of its rear tires. The gap should be longer on a wet road or in poor visibility.

5. Always be aware that the unexpected can happen at any time.

Lastly, although it may go without saying – be patient and considerate on the road. Don’t forget we are all human and we all make mistakes at times. Keep your cool and avoid getting overwrought or worse still – yelling abuse or making rude gestures! It’s not worth it – but safe driving is!  It might save lives, as well as money on your Maryland car insurance
